Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the exact part numbers or SKUs that are Made in the USA?
Part Number Product Line SYS-220BT-HNC8R-US BigTwin® SYS-420GP-TNAR+-US GPU SuperServer
- Does Made in the USA mean all components are US made?
- No, in today’s global economy, it’s unrealistic to expect Supermicro to source every single part from inside the USA. We rely on trusted partners and suppliers to securely deliver components for our final products. Supermicro sources key components from trade agreement act (TAA) approved and compliant countries.
- What vertical segments will be the most interested in Made in the USA?
- Federal customers need this now. Financial & Healthcare customers and cloud service providers who service these industries are quickly moving to more secure, “Made in the USA” procurement.
- Is Supermicro the only server manufacturer to have products made in the USA?
- No. But, unlike any of our competitors, Supermicro has its headquarter, design team and main factory co-located in San Jose, California, in the USA. Most of our competitors do not have any Made in the USA products and rely completely on off-shore manufacturing. This is a critical advantage for Supermicro’s customers.
- Does Supermicro do anything else in production that is differentiated from its competitors?
- Yes. Supermicro randomly X-rays motherboards. This patent-pending technology allows Supermicro to improve quality, validate manufacturing specs and verify delivery as intended by our world-class, USA hardware design and engineering teams. Additionally, Supermicro’s firmware design, validation and code-management of our BIOS & BMC firmware is USA-based. The BIOS firmware is compiled and installed in the USA – on our Made in the USA products
- Is Made in the USA the same as assembled in the USA?
- No. Made in the USA is a much stronger claim than assembled in the USA. The term assembly simply implies putting components together that perform exactly like they would in any other product. For example, putting bulbs in a flashlight would be assembly, not manufacturing, in the USA.
- If many of our product components come from foreign sources, how can Supermicro claim Made in the USA?
- Made in the USA comes from substantially transforming (manufacturing) the components into a server, within a US-based factory. The internal components together perform a different function as a server, rather than a game box or a phone, for example.
- Does the US government require federal agencies to buy products Made in the USA?
- Yes; the new executive orders, as recent as January 2021, put special requirements on buying American made products. All requests for proposals (RFPs) from US Federal agencies now have the requirement for American-made or “trade agreement act” (TAA) products. This requirement is now shifting from just made in TAA countries to being made within the USA for high level and sensitive IT equipment used by the US government. With specific “Made in the USA” part numbers, labeling, and logos, Supermicro is helping our customers comply with these new executive orders.
- Would customers outside of US federal agencies be interested in Made in the USA?
- Yes; many market segments who are security conscientious, like Financial Services, Healthcare, and even Retail customers are gravitating to products Made in the USA as an assurance of product cyber security protections. These customers are often more concerned about what happens to their products during production, because once the server finally gets to their data center location, they can guarantee its protection and security inside of their own secured data centers.
- Will there be a price premium for Made in the USA products?
- Yes; although a very slight premium percentage, these products are well worth a higher suggested list price, with all the additional benefits that come from manufacturing them inside a US factory and adding additional security features.
- Are the Made in the USA products available for customers outside of the US?
- Yes, international customers outside the USA can order these products. We understand many customers outside of the USA trust the security and value of producing products within the US. With all the product cyber security protections we offer at our San Jose CA. production facility, even international customers may choose to order these solutions.
- Can customers tour the Supermicro San Jose, CA factory?
- Tours may be arranged by contacting a Supermicro sales representative.
- Is Made in the USA the same as Country of Origin USA?
- Those terms are generally interchangeable and mean the same thing. Customers who purchase Made in the USA products are getting a product whose country of origin is the USA.
- If a customer wants something beyond the current 3 product offerings listed for Made in the USA listed, can they order a custom configuration of any Supermicro solution and have it made in the USA?
- Yes. Unlike our competitors, Supermicro has the ability to build an order in our USA factory in compliance with the Made in the USA, Customs and Border Protection regulations, and ship directly to our customers. Contact your Supermicro sales representative.
- If a customer has a Made in the USA Supermicro product but needs a warranty replacement part, does that come from a USA factory with the latest firmware updates?
- The Supermicro replacement part is a “like-for-like”, meaning the replacement part will come from the same location as the original component. The latest and updated firmware version is available on our website free of charge and should be loaded onto your server after a motherboard replacement. This reduces any concerns of tampering during shipping or handling. Made in the USA servers are packaged and shipped with Tamper Evidence Tape to reduce this risk.
- If I order one of the three part numbers for a Made in the USA server, can I have it configured with any variation of memory, storage, and processors?
- The products have configuration flexibility, to the degree specified on the Supermicro web site for each individual product.
- What US government standard did Supermicro meet for calling our new servers, “Made in the USA”?
- We had an independent, outside consulting firm confirm that Supermicro met the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) standards for declaring these products “manufactured in the USA”.
